Discover museums, galleries, arboretums,
zoos, and more!
Canberra is famous for its national museums and galleries, but those in the know also head to local treasures and attractions. Discover a garden that houses one-fifth of Australia's native plant species, a zoo where you can help save endangered animals, and a popular market housed in an old bus depot.
Many attractions are free to enter or offer family prices for an affordable getaway. Keep an eye out for tours, programs, hands-on activities, and things to do at each of these attractions.

1. Visit the Australian Parliament House
A must-see for a first visit. You can explore the building, see the parliamentary chambers and learn about Australian government. VisitCanberra lists it as one of Canberra's iconic experiences, with free entry.
2. Australian War Memorial
Very worthwhile if you're interested in Australian history and military history. The memorial and museum are substantial, so allow a few hours.
3. National Museum of Australia
Good choice for understanding Australia's history, culture and stories. It's particularly suitable if you want something educational but not too formal.
4. National Gallery of Australia & National Portrait Gallery
One of the main places to visit for art. You can combine it with the National Portrait Gallery and other attractions around the Parliamentary Triangle.
A smaller and very accessible gallery focusing on portraits of significant Australians.
5. Australian National Botanic Gardens
One of my top recommendations if you want a break from museums. VisitCanberra highlights its collection of more than 4,300 plant species across 35 hectares, representing about one-fifth of Australia's native plant diversity. There are walks and a Flora Explorer tour.
Australian National Botanic Gardens
6. National Arboretum Canberra
Great for views, walking and taking photos. It's also particularly good with children because of the large Pod Playground.
7. Mount Ainslie Lookout
Go here for one of the best views over Canberra. You can see the city, Lake Burley Griffin and the Parliamentary Triangle from above.
8. Questacon
Probably one of the best choices for families and children. It is an interactive science centre with hands-on exhibits, experiments and activities. VisitCanberra specifically recommends it for young families.
9. Lake Burley Griffin
Lake Burley Griffin is the centrepiece of Canberra and one of the best places to relax, walk, cycle and enjoy the city's scenery. The lake is surrounded by parks, museums, galleries, cafés and major landmarks, so it is easy to combine it with other sightseeing.
10. National Zoo & Aquarium
A good family option, especially if you want to see Australian and exotic animals. VisitCanberra highlights it as one of the city's family attractions.
